Now the program has been funded a second year, through a $12,000 grant from the Fairfield County Community Foundation. Certified teachers through the program are working with 74 students who are Norwalk public housing and are in first through third grades.
“This is a critical period in learning development for young children,” Norwalk Housing Executive Director Curtis Law said. “Children are absorbing so much, but they will lose what is not reinforced. We are delighted to be able to offer this program again as part of our summer curriculum at our Learning Centers, thanks to Fairfield County Community Foundation and its contributors.”
The program has proven successful in helping students maintain and even improve on their literacy skills. The Norwalk Housing Authority has also recently been granted license to run the Head Start Program. The group is also in charge of a college scholarship program and the Learning Center Program.
