NORWALK, Conn. -- In celebration of its 50th anniversary, the Norwalk Community College Foundation will host a 2015 Speaker Series.

The first speaker in the series will be Kweisi Mfume, a former five-term congressman and former president and CEO of the NAACP, who will discuss “The Relevance of Community Colleges Today” at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Norwalk Community College's East Campus PepsiCo Theater.

A question-and-answer session will follow the lecture and community conversation. Mfume will meet informally with students at 5 p.m., and be feted at a reception at 6 p.m. in the NCC East Campus atrium.

Mfume is current chairman of the Board of Regents at Morgan State University in Maryland. He was a five-time member of Congress, a former member of the Baltimore City Council and a graduate of Johns Hopkins University.

He has had a career as a civil rights activist, congressman, broadcaster, policy maker, CEO and author. Mfume co-sponsored the historic Americans With Disabilities Act and has worked to close race and gender gaps in the areas of compliance, health care and corporate diversity.
