Juliette Cassouras, 6, contributed a bag of potatoes to the Cranbury Elementary School's Thanksgiving gift baskets for needy families within the school. On Monday afternoon, she learned how every donation counts. She and her classmates took their individual contributions to the auditorium and filled the school's stage with food.
"They were overwhelmed by the amount of food," says Deirdre Sullivan, co-coordinator of the project. She spent the afternoon with her fellow PTO members, sorting the food into large containers. "It teaches them, in a concrete way, that if they all do one little thing, it adds up to something terrific."
This year, the school will distribute 10 baskets to families identified by school administrators, up from six last year. Each student is assigned a food item to bring in or $1, which helps to purchase turkeys. In addition to all the Thanksgiving fixings, the school donates pantry staples to the baskets.
"This is one of my favorite activities of the year," says PTO President April Guilbault.
