Community colleges throughout Connecticut soon may be able to develop their own special campus police forces if a proposal recently approved by lawmakers is signed by Gov. Dannel Malloy, according to the CT Post.

The three community colleges in Fairfield County are Naugatuck Valley in Danbury, Norwalk Community College, and Housatonic in Bridgeport. This proposal follows last fall's shooting at a community college in Roseburg, Ore., which killed 10 and injured nine more, the CT Post said.

State Rep. Dan Carter, a Bethel Republican, said the idea is to give community colleges the ability to have their own certified police force,s similar to what larger universities have, according to the CT Post. Community college officials said this is needed to ensure the safety of students and staff, the CT Post reports.
