The Healthy Workplaces Employer Recognition Program offered three categories of distinction -- Platinum, Gold and Silver -- awarded on the basis of program components and outcomes. The college was among 13 recipients in the highest Platinum honor category recognized for their commitment to employee health and well-being.

To provide more insight into the honored programs, the audience heard first-hand case studies from a panel which included Norwalk Community College, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals, and Harman International. Dr. Paul Gallo, director of the college's Health and Wellness Center, represented the college in the Roundtable discussion and spoke about the NCC wellness initiative.

The Healthy Workplace Employer Recognition Program is an initiative of The Business Council’s Wellness Roundtable. Concentrating on the issues of health and wellness, The Wellness Roundtable is a vehicle for best practice exchange, conducts a communications and events program to raise awareness of wellness and serves as a catalyst for employers to take cooperative action in meeting the health-related needs of their employees.

Norwalk Community College offers employees such workplace health initiatives as wellness walks, a tobacco-free campus, a Health and Wellness Center that features a gym and exercise studios, fitness evaluation services provided by both the faculty and trained Exercise Science students, a lunchtime health series that brings in lecturers to discuss health options with employees, and classes in dance, aerobics, weight training, yoga and meditation.

The Wellness Center also features a seasonal farmers market that provides employees and students with fresh produce. Research demonstrates that employers realize increased productivity and reduced direct health-care costs when they offer health and wellness programs to their employees.
