Put the Family to Work Over the Holidays

With the holidays just days away, you’re probably hyperventilating about shopping, wrapping, cooking or traveling. And if you’re planning to sell your house in 2011, you’ve got even more on your plate.

Here are some things you can do over the holidays to keep everyone busy, and that might help your house get in good shape when you're ready to sell.

*  Are your kids home from college? Fantastic! Send them out to buy some clear plastic boxes. I like the sturdy ones with interlocking lids because they're easy to stack. Have the kids sort through their own stuff and pack what they want to keep. Remind them that if they haven’t missed clothing or belongings while they were away from home, perhaps it’s time to say goodbye to them altogether.

*  Middle and high schoolers can be put on toy and children’s book duty. Have them empty the cupboards and make three piles. Pile 1 is for toys with broken or missing pieces. Pile 2, for toys and books they don’t want. Pile 3 is what they will keep.
