A two-story, single-family home on Lakeview Avenue caught on fire around 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 12, according to the Dracut Fire Department. Firefighters arrived at the scene to see heavy fire emerging from the front of the house.
A second alarm was struck shortly after firefighters arrived.
The house had a balloon-frame structure, which allowed the fire to spread between the walls. Firefighters cut open walls to extinguish the flames, a process that the Dracut Fire Department calls "labor-intensive."
The house sustained smoke and water damage, but damage from the fire was limited to the home's kitchen and breezeway.
Firefighters were able to rescue one pet cat from the blaze, but another died in the fire.
The fire was brought under control around 5:45 p.m., but the family was displaced and spent the night with family members.
"Companies did a great job containing the fire to the two rooms in the kitchen and the breezeway," said Chief Richard Patterson.
Fire departments from the following towns provided mutual aid:
- Lowell
- Tyngsborough
- Methuen
- Pelham
- Hudson, New Hampshire
While Dracut fire companies worked the fire, off-duty Dracut firefighters and Nashua, New Hampshire firefighters covered Dracut fire stations.
The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation by the Dracut Fire Department.
