Suffolk County Sheriff’s deputies stopped Stony Brook resident Vernon Lewis, 55, shortly before 1 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 10, when he was spotted driving 80 mph in a posted 40 mph zone on Route 111 in Brentwood.

According to Suffolk County Sheriff Errol Toulon, during the speeding stop, deputies determined that Lewis was potentially intoxicated, and he was taken into custody.

At the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Contempt Bureau, Lewis submitted to a chemical breath test that determined his blood alcohol content was .12 percent and he was arrested.

Lewis was charged with driving while intoxicated and later released to a sober third-party. He is scheduled to appear back in court at a later date to respond to the DWI charge.
