You were right, local residents: A small tornado did hit the Paramus area yesterday, the National Weather Service confirmed tonight.

That accounts for the large number of trees downed at George Washington Memorial Park Cemetery, the Paramus Golf Club, the Ridgewood Country Club and outside Bergen Regional Medical Center.

Its winds are also the likely reason for severe damage in nearby areas, including Soldier Hill Road (photos, above).

The EF-1 tornado touched down at 3:16 p.m. and cut a path about a 100 yards wide and nearly 1¼ miles long — hitting 100 miles per hour, the NWS said.

No one was hurt.

The NWS confirmed the tornado from Doppler radar data, damage assessments and eyewitness reports.

Tornados are categorized in the EF scale, with a rating of 0 the weakest and 5 the strongest, based on sustained wind speed. An EF-1 tornado runs from 86 to 110 mph.
