RAMAPO, N.Y. -- A pair of underground pipelines that would carry crude oil through parts of Ramapo and Hillburn are being proposed by a fuel transfer company, according to lohud.com.

A pair of underground pipelines are being proposed for parts of Ramapo and Hillburn that would cut through a pristine corner of the Ramapo River watershed.

The company proposing the pipelines, Pilgrim Pipeline Holdings LLC, said the two, 178-mile long parallel pipelines would run between Albany and Linden, N.J., carrying refined oil products such as gasoline. The proposed route in Rockland, would have the pipelines enter from Orange County just south of the Sloatsburg border, heading southeast between Potake and Cranberry ponds, then through a small part of Hillburn before leaving New York, added lohud.com.

Supervisor Christopher St. Lawrence said the Town of Ramapo plans to discuss the matter during the Wednesday meeting, reported lohud.com.

Rockland County Executive Ed Day and at least one Ramapo official told the lohud.com that they are concerned about the proposal because the project would cut through a pristine corner of the county, in the heart of the Ramapo River watershed.

Hillburn Mayor Craig Flanagan said he might consider the project if it would reduce the number of oil trains going through his village, said lohud.com.

The project has been facing fierce opposition throughout the state with more than 30 municipalities in New Jersey and nearly 20 in New York, according to the Coalition Against Pilgrim Pipeline.
