Hosted by the New Rochelle Fund for Educational Excellence, the exhibit is one of several events across the country to mark the 100 years since Strayhorn's birth. The jazz legend worked with Duke Ellington for years, and together they wrote “Take the ‘A’ Train” and “Lush Life,” among others.

The exhibit, titled "Strayhorn: An Illustrated Life," is based on a new book by that title by A. Alyce Claerbaut and David Schlesinger, which will be published by Agate Bolden in November. Strayhorn was born Nov. 29, 1915 and died May 31, 1967.

In addition to material taken from the book, the exhibit features some never-before-seen artifacts from Strayhorn's home, including art work and personal items.

A pioneering African-American composer, arranger and pianist, from the 1940s to 1960s, Strayhorn worked with Ellington for three decades.

The exhibit examines his life and his achievements, as well as his support for civil rights.

New Rochelle resident Leslie Demus is Strayhorn’s niece and president of the Billy Strayhorn Foundation, established in 1997 to bring recognition to the composer and shed light on his freedom to be himself.

Demus said she's especially pleased to bring Strayhorn’s story to students at New Rochelle High School.

“Collaboration with organizations that promote the music and image of Billy Strayhorn to students from elementary school through college, and telling the Strayhorn story to a new generation, are important goals for the Billy Strayhorn Foundation,” Demus said.

The "Strayhorn: An Illustrated Life" exhibit is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays and by special appointment. The address for New Rochelle High School is 265 Clove Road, but the new wing is actually on North and Braemer avenues.
