Seamstress Made Agreement With Prison Escapees To Kill Husband, Says Report

DANNEMORA, N.Y. -- The prison seamstress charged with helping two convicted killers escape from the upstate Clinton Correctional Facility made an agreement with the men that once out of prison, they would kill her husband, Lyle Mitchell, according to CBS News.

Joyce Mitchell, 51, told authorities the reason she didn't follow through with the plan was that she became worried about her husband, CBS News is reporting, citing a law enforcement source.

The search for the men -- 48-year-old Richard Matt and 34-year-old David Sweat -- now entering a 10th night, is coming at a cost of $1 million per day, CBS News reports.

Mitchell  is being closely monitored 24/7 in a 6- by 9-foot cell after making her second court appearance on Monday since being arrested on Friday.

Wearing handcuffs, a prison jump suit and bulletproof vest, Mitchell mostly kept her head down as Stephen Johnson, her newly hired attorney, told Plattsburgh City Court Judge Mark Rodgers that Mitchell is waiving a preliminary felony hearing.

Mitchell was charged with promoting prison contraband in the first degree, a Class D felony, and criminal facilitation in the fourth Degree, a Class A misdemeanor.

State Police said Monday they are continuing to search for the escapees in the area around the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora.

The area around State Route 374 remains the focus of the search, and the road will remain closed between General Leroy Manor Road and Rand Hill Road through at least Tuesday, police said.   As of Monday, more than 800 law enforcement officers from state, local and federal agencies are assisting in this search. Investigators will continue to search door to door to remind residents to be vigilant.
