The free lecture will take place in the Christopher J. Murphy Auditorium. Blaser recently was recognized by Time magazine among its "100 Most Influential People."
In his current book "Missing Microbes," Blaser reaches back to the discovery of antibiotics, which ushered in a golden age of medicine, and then traces how subsequent overuse of these seeming wonder drugs has left its mark on your body's system, contributing to the rise of what Blaser calls modern plagues: obesity, asthma, allergies, diabetes, and certain forms of cancer.
Blaser's studies suggest antibiotic use during early childhood poses the greatest risk to long-term health, and, alarmingly, American children receive on average seventeen courses of antibiotics before they are twenty years old. He also takes listeners into the lab to recount his groundbreaking studies, while providing support for his theory and offering tips to avoid future health problems.
