FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- Former President Jimmy Carter issued a brief statement revealing he had cancer in several parts of his body on Wednesday.

Carter had surgery to remove a mass on his liver on Aug. 3. His statement said the procedure revealed that cancer had spread to other parts of his body.

The 39th president said he would be adjusting his schedule to accommodate treatment at Emory Healthcare in Georgia. 

Carter also said he would release a statement with further details as they become available.
