Local Mom Sells the Cars She Loves to Drive

Desiree Powers could be your typical Fairfield County soccer mom, with three kids constantly needing shuttles to their athletic and social activities. But Powers doesn't drive a typical "mom-mobile" — no mini-van or big SUV for her. Her ride of choice is a Volvo. Not only does she drive one, she sells them, too, at Volvo of Stamford.

"I'd been in sales and someone recommended that I apply for a job there," she recalled. "I'd owned Volvos and the dealership was six minutes from our house in Darien, so it seemed like a good fit."

In the three years she has been there, Powers realized the fit was perfect. "It's a family-oriented place," she said. As a parent herself, "I know what parents need in a car."

Volvo of Stamford also knows that busy parents don't want to waste time financing or registering a new car. "We handle all that ourselves," she said, making the process as painless and stress-free as possible. There's no high-powered sales pitch, either. "We're laid back here," she said. "We try to make it a relaxing experience."

Of course, Volvos have such a great reputation, they practically sell themselves. "We have people come in here and tell us their parents owned Volvos back in the '70s," she said. "Volvo owners tend to be very loyal."

Their demographic has also shifted toward a younger, more active group, with busy, athletic lifestyles. To stay in touch with that, Volvo of Stamford sponsors the Greenwich Cup, a series of running, biking and swimming events organized by Threads & Treads. Powers is a frequent participant. "Running makes me feel better, especially if it's for a good cause."

Whether it's running a 5K or running her kids to an activity, Powers does it in a Volvo, and is all too happy to tell other local moms why it's the perfect car for them, too.
