Bedford Board Talks Budget Again As Time Runs Out

BEDFORD HILLS, N.Y. – The Bedford Town Board sat down for another round of budget discussions on Monday, with Supervisor Lee V.A. Roberts declaring at the start of the meeting that time is running short to make decisions.

“We’ve got to make some decisions tonight and tomorrow night,” Roberts said. “We’ve heard a lot from the department heads, and it’s getting to be time to get some finality to this.”

The supervisor must submit her tentative budget to the town clerk by Monday, Oct. 31, as required by state law. Monday, Town Justice Erik Jacobsen discussed the court’s budget, regarding who will be able to take over accounting obligations for the two court clerks.

“I don’t want to see having mistakes made, we have to clean up mistakes that were made,” Jacobsen said. “It’s my opinion we need a dedicated person in that position.”

Roberts said the town cannot lawfully bring on a part-time employee to aid the court department, and it would be fiscally irresponsible to bring on a full-time person for the job. The board told Jacobsen that the department would have to practice job sharing with the employees that it has.

Also discussed at the meeting:

-The local libraries will bring in their budgets on Tuesday to discuss potential cuts.

-The open spaces fund is declared as the “wild card” of the budget, which could see a possible year’s suspension depending on the public hearing on the subject. The public hearing is set for Tuesday, Nov. 1.
