MONTROSE, N.Y. The Hendrick Hudson School District accepted a donation of $1,500 from the Cortlandt Community Ambulance Corps and CVS Pharmacy Foundation, on Wednesday night. The donation will help fund a sensory gym at Frank G. Lindsey Elementary School.
Were here to try to help the community, and its hard to get the word out, said Kathy Steward, president of the Cortlandt Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
The new sensory gym at Frank G. Lindsey will include suspended swings, rolling scooters, trampolines, balance beams, mats, climbing and jumping apparatus, and large yoga-type balls.
This equipment is typically used by physical therapists to help students with physical disabilities build strength, increase range of motion, and improve motor and coordination skills. It is also used by occupational therapists for students with sensory processing disabilities, the activities and stimulation can help students have greater focus in the classroom.
Stewart said the volunteer ambulance corps has supported various community activities, including the Hendrick Hudson Leos Stay-Awake-A-Thon, has donated defibrillators, and gives free CPR classes.
Once again our community has demonstrated they are partners with our school system, said Superintendent Daniel McCann. We are thankful for their help and their continued support as we seek to increase opportunities and programs for our special needs students.
