Ex-Warriors Go 1-2 at Waveny Race

The Scarecrow from "The Wizard of Oz" would have liked Tuesday night's Summer Cross Country Series race at Waveny Park. The figure 8 race embodied his statement that "people do go both ways" as the field of nearly 100 runners was split in half. Each half then set out in opposite directions on the 2.35-mile course and crisscrossed four times before finishing back where they started.

Trumbull's Matt Klein, fresh off winning his age group Sunday at the famed Falmouth Road Race, showed little fatigue from that seven-mile effort as he outdistanced Westhill grad Andrew Erskine by 13 seconds, finishing in 12:15. Cara Costich, the former Wilton High School star, who is preparing to return to Cornell for her third cross country campaign, showed she's in shape by easily winning the women's title in 14:19, more than a minute ahead of fellow former Warrior Celeste Hoelzl.

The series, which regularly draws a field of almost 100 runners to the park each Tuesday, continues next week with the three-person Ekiden relay before concluding the following week with the Luminaria Loop. Results and race details are available at the Club Connecticut website.
