NEW CANAAN, Conn. The only thing keeping the Town Hall parking lot from becoming an outdoor barbecue was the lack of grills and the presence of the political signs.
Dozens of New Canaan residents gathered in the lot Tuesday for the second early vote of the Republican Town Committee Caucus. Friends and neighbors huddled together on a warm summer evening to talk about who might win the GOP nominations to run for town offices. But many were just happy to be shooting the breeze.
Its a great night. It has a collegial feel, said Steve Karl, who was chatting up friends while campaigning for another year on the Town Council. The turnout shows that many residents genuinely care about the electoral process.
More than 700 people cast ballots in the caucus, according to committee officials. The June 25 early vote saw 611 ballots cast. Party officials will not announce final results until after the July 19 caucus, which will be held at Saxe Middle School.
Karl said it was a good idea to have early votes to allow town Republicans to take part in the process even if they cant make it to the polls next Tuesday.
First Selectman candidate Robert Mallozzi III also liked the early voting and the turnout. He mentioned the lengthy line outside of Town Hall before the polls opened at 5 p.m. Its good for the process, Mallozzi said.
