Isabel Taben likes any day she can get away from school. So naturally, Thursday was a nice occasion.
A reported 18 inches of new snow in New Canaan allowed Isabel, 14, another day away from Saxe Middle School and time to hang out with her friend and classmate Lily Baer, also 14.
"I don't like school," Isabel said, laughing with Lily as they walked along Elm Street on Thursday.
But the girls are dreading the idea of being in school as summer begins. "I like (the day off), but I'd rather not go to school late in June," Isabel said. "It's really hot out, and you look outside and you'd rather be at the beach."
With four school days lost because of snow, New Canaan Public Schools are slated to remain open later in the year. Board of Education Chairman Nick Williams said the last day of school is now June 21. The last day of classes had initially been set for June 15 without any snow days.
Given the wild winter, Williams said the school board would have to discuss possible scheduling changes at its Feb. 7 meeting. New Canaan Schools have three snow days remaining. District rules require the school year to be finished by the end of the third full week of June. If the district uses its last three bad weather days, Williams said the district might have to cut from spring break, scheduled for April 18 to 22.
"I realize that (cutting spring break) would be a difficult thing to do," he said. "There are a lot of people who will want to get away, especially after this long winter."
But Williams said the district could save some days because the schools calendar has 182 school days, two more than required by the state. "This is an important issue for people and we get that," Williams said.
Isabel and Lily said they would not mind losing spring break days if it means having as much summer as possible. "I don't want to be in school late," Isabel said.
