NC Black 8th-Graders Go 1-3 in Weekend Play

The New Canaan Black eighth-grade boys travel basketball team sponsored by Mad Dog Radio went 1-3 in games last week with a couple of hard-fought losses.

In its first game of the weekend, NC Black fell to the Danbury PAL, 36-24, in the Ridgefield Basketball Association's Invitational Tournament. Leading scorer and rebounder Zachary Allen missed the game with an injury, and in his absence several players stepped up. Tyler S. Edwards, Paul Hagopian, Michael Kraus (higher scorer with 12 points) and Deven Appel played well for NC in the setback.

NC Black lost a 38-32 contest to Ridgefield in an up-tempo contest. Claude Chandonnet several times ran end to end on fast breaks to score and was high scorer with eight points. Brandon Abate did some nice outside shooting, and T.J. Simpson blocked numerous shots. On one play, Abate, knocked to the floor, grabbed a rebound on his knees and fed Simpson for a basket.

New Canaan earned its first win with a 46-34 decision over St. Teresa. The victory was the third time this month NC defeated the Trumbull school. Chandonnet scored 25 points on a variety of shots, while guards Kraus, Abate, Hagopian and Justin Meichner kept St. Teresa from getting good shots. Meichner also contributed on the offensive end with a 3-pointer and later executed a classic head fake that allowed him to go inside for a bucket. Edwards made some terrific shot blocks, especially late in the game to seal the win. Krauss contributed eight points. Chandonnet was the team's top rebounder with 10 followed by Appel with nine and Simpson with eight.

New Canaan dropped a 42-40 decision to Darien, rallying from a 27-14 halftime deficit to get close late in the game. Chandonnet scored 21 points while Edwards had nine. Appel and Edwards also grabbed five rebounds, and Hagopian dished out two assists. Meichner also had a key basket during New Canaan's run to get close in the second half.
