The Yonkers Fire Department Life Safety House is "a four room mobile classroom" and "is one of the most important classrooms our students enter," said representatives with the school district in a press release.

"The Life Safety House pulled up to the PEARLS Hawthorne School where curious and eager 5th graders were ready to learn how to 'get low and go' to safety in case of a fire," representatives said in the release. "The students learned fire prevention techniques, and the emergency procedures to evacuate from a home or building where a fire has started. The youngsters experienced a smokey simulation in the house that required them to get low and go to safety."

School district and city officials joined the students in the event to kick off National Fire Safety Month, "an important focus of the valuable partnership between the Yonkers Public Schools and the Yonkers Fire Department," according to the release.
