Breaking News: Morning Update: School Districts Announce Early Dismissal Due To Heat

Norwalk Voters Pick Murphy, McMahon For Senate

NORWALK, Conn. – Norwalk voted in line with the rest of the state in Tuesday’s primary, selecting Democrat Chris Murphy and Republican Linda McMahon as the candidates in November’s election for U.S. Senate.

Murphy received 1,658 votes from Norwalk Democrats, defeating his opponent Susan Bysiewicz, who received 503 votes. McMahon received 1,235 votes from Norwalk Republicans, while her opponent Chris Shays received 844 votes.

McMahon is the former CEO of World Wrestling Entertainment. Murphy is currently the U.S. Representative for Connecticut’s 5th Congressional District. The two will be competing for the seat that will be left vacant by U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman, an Independent, who will retire at the end of his term.

"I'm most concerned about the economy, and when it's going to improve," said Dominica Gioiella as she walked out of Tracey Elementary School. She added that the voters have to elect leaders both locally and nationally who will work to get the economy back on track.

Gioiella voted in the Democratic primary, though she did not want to mention who she voted for. She said that it is important to participate in the primaries. "Voting is a privilege, and it should be exercised."

Others agreed that it was their civic duty. When asked why he voted, Richard Sanford shrugged and said, "It's voting day."

Sanford cast his vote for Chris Shays. "I think Shays has the experience. I think Linda McMahon is a phony."

Pat Dougherty also voted for Shays in the primary. "I don't like Linda McMahon," she said. She added that even though the primaries frequently see a low turnout, it is important for voters to participate in them. Otherwise, the candidate that they like may not still be in the running when November rolls around.
