NORWALK, Conn. -- Roger Stone, a Norwalk native, has abruptly left his position as top adviser to Donald Trump's presidential campaign after fallout from comments Trump made about Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly after Thursday's debate, according to multiple reports.

Stone had reportedly told Trump to refrain from directing attacks at Kelly, who is popular among Republican voters, and instead focus on his business background and his campaign slogan to "Make America Great Again," Politico.com reported.

Instead, Trump launched another attack at Kelly in an interview on CNN on Friday night, referring to her debate question about off-color language he has used to describe women, including comedian Rosie O'Donnell.

“You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes, blood coming out of her — wherever,” Trump said of Kelly in the CNN interview.

Stone then submitted his resignation to Trump in an email Saturday morning, but that didn't stop Trump from saying later in the day that he fired Stone, Politico.com said.

"Sorry @realDonaldTrump didn't fire me - I fired Trump," Stone tweeted Saturday afternoon @RogerJStoneJr .
