"Her leadership is inclusive and motiving,'' Lieberman said. "She is disciplined, organized, knows how to set goals and develops practical plans to achieve them. She is really a purpose-driven team builder, and I've seen that."

Lieberman is a board member of the American Federation for Children, a Washington, nonprofit that advocates for private school voucher programs. Devos was the former chairwoman of the organization.

"Everything I have seen tells me that Betsy is ready to take on this assignment and do it very well,'' Lieberman said.

Lieberman, 74, was born in Stamford and now resides in New Haven. He served in the Senate from 1989-2013. Originally a Democrat, he also won a Senate race running as an independent. He retired at the end of his term in 2013.
