Lawmaker Demands Answers On Storm Response By Eversource, UI

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. — A local lawmaker is questioning the response from Eversource and United Illuminating after some Fairfield County customers were without power for up to three days after a late October rainstorm.

The storm, which brought up to 4 inches of rain and wind gusts of up to 40 mph, left over 100,000 customers without power for multiple days, said State Rep. J.P. Sredzinski (R-Newtown, Monroe). 

Sredzinski spoke Wednesday at a hearing before the General Assembly’s Energy & Technology Committee to assess whether the utility companies followed minimum performance standards for emergency preparation and response.

Sredzinski spoke about the impact of their response to Monroe and Newtown, noting that several local neighborhoods saw power outages lasting more than three days.

“While the storm we faced on Oct. 29 certainly wasn’t catastrophic to Monroe and Newtown, there were a number of utility customers in my district that faced extended power outages, some for more than three days,” said Sredzinski. 

“It is incumbent for me as a state representative serving on the Energy & Technology Committee to maintain proper oversight on our utility companies, especially when they seek rate increases on a consistent basis.”

Sredzinski represents Monroe and Newtown in the 112th House District. He is ranking member on the General Assembly’s Public Safety Committee.

He is also the public safety dispatch supervisor for the Town of Stratford.
