During the past legislative session, Duff introduced Senate Bill 311 in an effort to provide more flexibility to food importing and manufacturing establishments across Connecticut, allowing them to import and manufacture products in compliance with current federal and state food standards.
Clarifying Connecticut law, the legislation removes requirements that products such as flour, bread and pasta be enriched with certain vitamins and minerals – requirements no longer mandated by the federal government.
“Small businesses equal big business for Connecticut – they are drivers of our economy and it is critically important that we foster an economic environment where they can thrive,” Duff said. “For more than a century Gus Sclafani Importers have been a pillar of our community and an important part of Connecticut’s economy. I am happy to have led passage of this legislation that will help businesses like Gus Sclafani Importers and many others across the state.”
Bruce Sclafani thanked Duff on behalf of his family business "for proposing and supporting legislation this year that clarifies Connecticut law to allow our business to import and sell certain high-quality pasta products from Italy in compliance with federal law.”
Sclafani, who originally contacted Duff in January, said the senator remained unwavering in his efforts throughout the legislative process.
