Worker Stops Attempted Burglary At Norwalk Deli

NORWALK, Conn. – A man working late at the Merrittview Deli on Main Avenue scared off two would-be burglars trying to smash their way through the store's front door early Thursday, police report.

Police gave the following account: The man was working on a computer at the deli at around 2 a.m. when he noticed a white pickup truck pull into the parking lot. He paid it no mind until he heard a loud bang a few minutes later.

He went to the front door and found it smashed with a rock. Two men were outside trying to kick in the rest of the door. The man yelled out, and the duo turned and got back into their truck. The man told police that they drove off in the direction of Wilton.

Also from the Norwalk police blotter:

A Bridgeport man was arrested after he was found asleep in a stolen car on Grumman Avenue Thursday morning, police said.

Police received a report of a suspicious vehicle and when they arrived, they found Jose Lopez, 29, asleep in a white BMW.

Officers woke him up and he reportedly would not answer their questions. When they ran the plate they found no record of it. They looked up the registration and VIN for the car and found it had been reported stolen in Bridgeport. Lopez was arrested and charged with third-degree larceny, a felony.

Do you think we should put a cop in every store & dwelling in the city? Thats the only way that they could do what this guy did, and you'd still complain because they got away. That said it was a great job by the employee or owner. What we really need is more people like him & the other person who called about a suspicious vehicle. Police really cant prevent or stop many crimes or catch criminals without our help. Its citizens apathy as much as anything else that has put us where we are crime wise.

Where did you read that as that is not in my post.

Well said, Ken P. We the community need to work together with the PD to report suspicious activity. When we do, everybody benefits. As the saying goes, "when you see something... say something."

The angry little person who posted below has been diagnosed with NPDDS (Norwalk Police Department Derangement Syndrome), please pay him no mind.

Great work employee of Merrittview Deli ..Its great to see the citizens doing the job of the NPD..I wonder if you will get a tax credit..Of course we will now see the obsessed stooges reply to my post, but they can just be ignored as they are simple and or being paid to post. This are obsessed with me due to me calling out the dirty secrets of Norwalk.
