WESTPORT, Conn. -- The former Westport school bus driver who was accused of making sexually explicit comments to students and threatening them will serve three years of probation and avoid jail time after pleading guilty to misdemeanor charges Wednesday, Feb. 19, according to TheHour.com.

Daniel Florio, 45, of Norwalk, pleaded guilty to second-degree threatening, breach of peace and second-degree reckless endangerment, all misdemeanors, in Norwalk Superior Court, TheHour.com reported.

Florio was suspended from his bus route on Oct. 18, 2013, after Dattco, the school bus company, received numerous complaints that Florio made inappropriate comments to students. The bus included students ages 11 to 13 on the ride to and from Coleytown Middle School that day. He was later terminated from the job.

He avoided jail time when the charge of risk of injury to a minor, a felony, was dropped, TheHour.com said.

At the time of his arrest, several parents lashed out against Westport school administrators, particularly the district’s transportation coordinator, for not insisting that Florio be pulled from duty following the morning bus run after students made complaints upon arrival at school. As a result, one parent said the students were "terrorized" by Florio on the return trip home.

His behavior on the afternoon bus run was so distressing that many of the students got off the bus before their scheduled stops, parents told the Board of Education. Other students were said to have gotten off the bus in tears.
