WESTPORT, Conn. — Westport police arrested a homeless man on several charges Friday after he was seen breaking into a car, police said.

Around 4:30 a.m., a Woodside Avenue homeowner confronted a man later identified as Darius McCallop, 32, who was breaking into his car, police said.

McCallop fled towards Kings Highway North.

Officers dispatched to the scene set up a perimeter and eventually found McCallop holed up in a locked common laundry room on Kings Highway North, police said. He was taken into custody without incident, police said.

McCallop was charged with third-degree burglary, third-degree burglary from a motor vehicle, third-degree criminal mischief and interfering with an officer, police said.

He was also charged with fugitive from justice because he had an active, extraditable violation of probation warrant out of the New York City Department of Correction. The original charge in that case was third-degree robbery.

McCallop was held on $25,000 and is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 23.

Searching the area of the incident, officers found a backpack containing what appeared to be items stolen from cars in the area.

The investigation continues.
