At around 2:30 p.m. Monday, troopers from Troop A-Southbury were dispatched to I-84 westbound at Exit 17 in Middlebury for a one-car crash. The vehicle had gone off the road and caught fire.

The car, which had veered off the highway for unknown reasons, struck a rock face ledge on the right shoulder, police said.

Sgt. Michael Dogali of Troop G-Bridgeport was traveling in the area on his way home from in-service training and quickly arrived at the crash scene.

He was met by passersby, who were attempting to remove the trapped driver from the car, police said.

Dogali used a fire extinguisher from his cruiser to put out the fire, but it continued to burn as he and passersby attempted to free the driver, police said.

Trooper First Class John McGeever and Trooper First Class Mitchell Welch, both of Troop A, arrived at the scene a short time later.

They were able to help Dogali and the passersby free the trapped driver, police said.

Once the driver, a 26-year-old man from White Plains, N.Y., had been freed, the troopers carried him to safety and transported him to the hospital for evaluation of minor injuries.

He was also issued an infraction for failure to maintain his lane, and was found to be driving on a suspended New York license, according to police.

Two troopers sustained minor cuts to their hands from the broken window, police said.
