RYE, N.Y. -- The two drivers killed in a multiple-car accident in Rye on Monday were from Connecticut, state police said Tuesday.
The identities of a male and female were being withheld pending notification of their families. They are from Hamden and Hartford.
Hazardous driving conditions due to snow on Interstate 95 appear to have contributed to a double fatal accident Monday afternoon near the Connecticut border, according to state police.
As state police were investigating a van-car accident just north of Exit 22 on I-95, a Dodge caravan lost control on the icy roadway, striking the two drivers from the first accident. The victims were tossed against the back of an airport shuttle van.
The two people were killed instantly as a result of the accidents, according to Trooper Matthew Izbicki, a state police spokesman for Troop T.
All northbound lanes of I-95 in Rye between Exit 21 and 22 were closed due to the collision, Izbicki said.
The accident occurred about 1:30 p.m. Monday.
The motorists were pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, which was at Mile Marker 14.
The driver of the Caravan was transported with a police escort to Westchester County Medical Center and treated for non-life threatening injuries, police said.
