At around 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, police were dispatched to the area of Douglas Road on a report that two men had suspiciously approached a home five or six times in the span of 20 minutes in order to pick up a package, police said. The men were identified as 20-year-old John Delacruz of Easton, Penn., and 27-year-old Neftali Fernandez Jimenez of New York City.
Both Delacruz and Jimenez told police that a package had been mistakenly sent to the Douglas Road address and they were simply trying to pick it up. The package was determined to be an iPhone, police said.
A search of the car they were driving turned up six new iPhones, multiple wire transfer receipts, and numerous addresses in New Canaan on a navigation app on Delacruz's phone, police said. An investigation revealed that the two were involved in a scam where iPhones were purchased fraudulently and shipped to homes in New Canaan, police said. Delacruz and Jimenez would then intercept the packages after they were delivered but before the homeowners found out about them, according to police.
The two were charged with third-degree larceny, larceny defined, and conspiracy. They were released on $5,000 bonds and will appear in court on June 2.
