A witness called Norwalk Police to report seeing a man entering parked cars in the area of Quintard Avenue at about 4:15 a.m. Monday. The caller described the suspect as a man wearing a black coat with white lettering on the back, according to the police report.
While looking for the suspect, an officer in the area noticed a car parked on Burritt Street with its dome light on but without anyone inside, police said. The officer looked into the car and saw that the dashboard-mounted stereo system was gone, and the wires were left exposed. A nearby resident confirmed that his $200 stereo was missing, police said.
At the same time, another officer in the area stopped a man matching the witness’s description on Lincoln Avenue. Jose Crespo, 50, of Appletree Lane had the stolen stereo in his jacket pocket, according to the police report. He was arrested at the scene.
Crespo also had a Samsung cellphone on him when he was arrested, police said. After Crespo told police the phone was not his, an officer dialed the number listed as “Home” in the phone’s address book. A Benedict Street resident answered the call, and the officer found that the resident's car had been entered and the phone was stolen from inside, according to the police report.
Crespo was charged with two counts each of third-degree burglary and sixth-degree larceny. He was held on combined $20,000 bond, and he is due in court on Jan. 14.
