A driver for a Mr. Softee ice cream truck reported that he was robbed near Dairy King on Main Street on the evening of June 14, police said. The victim told police that the suspect threatened to use a gun, but did not display one, to take cash from the truck, according to the police report.

Norwalk Police investigated the incident and identified the suspect as Bennie Gathers, 35, of Phillips Street, based on tips from the public after a photo was circulated by the local media earlier this month, police said. Gathers was arrested Saturday after warrants were served at his home, according to police reports.

Gathers was charged with first-degree robbery and sixth-degree larceny. He was held on a $350,000 bond, and assigned a court date of Aug. 26.
