On Sunday, June 11, New Canaan Police responded to a South Avenue home on a report that a $40,000 Mercedes Benz SUV had been stolen out of the driveway overnight. Police said the car had been left unlocked with the keys inside.
Two days later, they were contacted by the Milford Police Department, who said they had located the stolen car parked at a motel off I-95 in Milford. New Canaan officers responded to process the vehicle for evidence, and found a number of items in the car that did not belong to the SUV's owner. It was determined that the items had been stolen from a number of cars that had been left unlocked in driveways in Norwalk, police said.
Police were able to identify two suspects in the theft of the Mercedes Benz using video surveillance from the motel parking lot, as well as statements from Milford officers. Police said they identified the suspects as 19-year-old Kristian Medel of Norwalk, as well as a 17-year-old juvenile from Norwalk.
While they were on scene at the motel, officers located Medel and took him into custody. He was charged with first-degree larceny of a motor vehicle worth more than $20,000, conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny, and conspiracy. He was held on a $50,000 bond and appeared in court the next day.
On Thursday, June 22, police went to the Juvenile Detention Center in Bridgeport to serve the juvenile with an arrest warrant. He was also charged with first-degree larceny of a motor vehicle worth more than $20,000, conspiracy to commit first-degree larceny, and conspiracy. He was being held on charges connected with the theft of another car in Norwalk earlier in the month, police said.
New Canaan Police are again urging residents to always lock their car doors, and to not leave their keys in their cars.
