STAMFORD, Conn. — Three Stamford police officers dove into the waters off Cummings Park to save a 7-year-old boy who fell into Long Island Sound from the fishing pier Sunday night, police said.

The boy could not swim and was holding onto a pylon in the water to stay afloat, police said.

Stamford officers arrived at Cummings Park at 6:27 p.m. Sunday and saw a child about 70 feet out with his head just above the water, police said.

Officers Damien Rosa and Michael Montanaro ran down the pier, and Sgt. Charles "Chip" White jumped into the water from the beach alongside the pier, police said.

When Rosa and Montanaro saw the child’s arms shaking while holding onto the pylon, they jumped the 4-foot fence off the pier into the water, police said.

Rosa was able to grab child, and all three officers swam back to the beach with him, police said.

EMS transported the 7-year-old boy to Stamford Hospital, where he was treated and released.

"The Stamford Police Department is very proud of the response of the three officers who responded to this call for assistance. We are very happy that the child is now home his family tonight," said a Facebook post from the department.
