SHELTON, Conn. — A Monroe man was seriously injured when he was thrown by another person into the Housatonic River from the Derby-Shelton Bridge early Thursday, police said.

At 1 a.m. Thursday, Shelton police and fire responded to the bridge and saw a 30-year-old man submerged in the water, police said.

"Officer David Eldridge swam out to victim and quickly pulled him to shore with the assistance of fire personnel," police spokesman Detective Christopher Nugent said. "Once brought to shore, the male victim was transported to Yale-New Haven Hospital with serious injuries."

Officers determined that an altercation occurred on the bridge, and the victim was thrown off the bridge, Nugent said.

The bridge connects downtown Derby and Shelton via Bridge Street.

At least two emergency responders had to be treated for exposure, according to the Valley Independent Sentinel . Overnight temperatures were in the 30s.

Witnesses to the incident are asked to contact the Shelton Police Department at 203-924-1544. Calls can be kept confidential.
