A Rainbow Circle resident reported receiving the envelope Saturday, police said. The recipient told police that he threw out the envelope after suspecting it was a prank, police said. The resident called to report the incident Tuesday morning after learning of the similar situation in the Tokeneke section of town Monday, police said.

The Rainbow Circle resident did not report any ill health effects from exposure to the powder, according to police reports. The substance was recovered by Darien Police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Officials said they do not believe anyone is in danger from exposure.

“At this point there is no reason to believe that the two incidents are connected,” Darien Police said in a press release.

On Monday, a Tokeneke resident contacted a constable to report an envelope filled with a white powder had been delivered to the home that day. Local and federal officials quarantined the area as a precaution, and by 7:30 p.m. the substance had been removed from the area, police said. The substance is being analyzed by the Connecticut State Police crime lab.

Nine people, including the Tokeneke constable, were exposed to the substance Monday. Officials decided the people could “self-decontaminate,” which means they were directed to change clothes and wash their hands “solely as a precaution,” police said.

“There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that any resident is in any further danger as a result of this incident as all of the evidence has been secured and removed,” Darien Police said in a press release.

The FBI is investigating the incidents.
