James McLamb, of 37 Harding Place, New Haven, appeared in court Monday in state Superior Court in Stamford. A second suspect -- an unnamed 15-year-old -- is expected to be arraigned Tuesday, police said.

McLamb said nothing in court other than responding "Good afternoon" to Judge Alex Hernandez at the arraignment.

Prosecutor Paul Ferencek asked for bond to be set at $2 million for what he called the "underlying violence" of the attack last Wednesday on Antonio Muralles. He died early Thursday of a stab wound to the chest suffered as he was assaulted by a group of people Wednesday evening near the downtown McDonald's, police said.

Howard Ehring, the public defender who represented McLamb, asked Hernandez to set bail at $1 million. But the judge agreed with the prosecutor and went with  $2 million.

McLamb was held in police custody and will return to court on April 2.

At about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday, Stamford EMS was responding to an unrelated incident when they saw a man collapse at the corner of Broad and Bedford streets, police said.

They started to treat the man and saw a stab wound to his chest, police said. He was transported to Stamford Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery. After several hours of surgery, he died of his injuries at 1:07 a.m., police said.

A group was assaulting the man with a stick when one of the male attackers pulled out a knife and stabbed Muralles several times in the torso, police said. The attackers fled on foot in different directions, police said.

The area is very heavily traveled and was well lit at the time of the attack, police said.
