NORWALK, Conn. -- Two men were arrested on gun charges after a report of shots fired in South Norwalk on Sunday.

Derik McCoy, 26, of Norwalk and Jermaine Smalls, 26, of Bridgeport were each charged with criminal possession of a firearm, weapon in a motor vehicle, carrying a pistol without a permit and conspiracy. Each was held on $250,000 bond and will appear in court May 4.

Officers responded to a shots fired call in the 30 block of Lexington Avenue at 5:22 p.m. Sunday, police said. Responding officers did not find any victims, but they were able to obtain a description of the suspect's vehicle and a license plate number, according to police. The description was broadcast to area police departments.

A short time later, the Westport Police Department reported that the suspect's vehicle was seen traveling on I-95. The car was stopped near Exit 19, and the two occupants, McCoy and Smalls, were detained, police said.

A pistol was recovered in the car, according to police. The two were arrested and taken back to Norwalk for processing.

Norwalk Police Chief Thomas Kulhawik praised the work of the responding officers and thanked community members for providing information that led to the arrest of McCoy and Smalls. He also thanked the Westport Police Department for its assistance.
