Christian O. Flores-Garcia, 25, was charged with third-degree assault, second-degree strangulation, interfering with an emergency call, second degree unlawful restraint, second-degree threatening and interfering with an officer in the incident.

The 31-year-old woman was upset after discovering her boyfriend of five months was in a relationship with another woman, police said. An argument broke out around 11 p.m. Friday after the other woman called the boyfriend, Sgt. Kelly Connelly said.

Angered that the 31-year-old woman threw his phone down, the man grabbed her and threw her on the bed several times and at one point got on top of her and started to strangle her, Connelly said.

He let go of her throat after she was able gasp out that he was suffocating her, Connelly said.

She tried to run out of the apartment, but he grabbed her and pulled her back into the bedroom and blocked her escape from the room, police said. He also threatened her, Connelly said.

"If you call police and try to get me deported I will have my people waiting here to kill you," Connelly quoted him as saying.

Her only means of escape was through a half-open window in the apartment, Connelly said.

"She lunged for the window, and she got about half way out when he grabbed her waist down and tried to pull her back in," she said.

The woman began to scream, and it got the attention of attention of a 29-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman who were outside smoking and they ran to her rescue by pulling her out, Connelly said.

The two witnesses then heard the man threaten the woman, saying he would kill her if the police arrived, she said.

The bloodied woman had visible swelling, bruising and scratches to her arms, legs and throat, Connelly said.

The man was arrested and $10,000 bond was posted. But after police discovered he had given a false name and date of birth, the bond was increased to $15,000 and given the additional charge of interfering with police.

The woman declined medical treatment, Connelly said.
