They found the body of a naked woman in the mud flats at low tide about 100 yards west of the point.

The father said he had seen the body in the same location at 2 p.m. the day before during low tide but thought it was a mannequin or doll and did not report it, police said. Another area resident also reported seeing the body the day before, too.

The victim was identified as Carol Ann Scalisi, 21, of 39 Meadow St., who had died of asphyxia by strangulation, police said.

Scalisi was last seen at about midnight Saturday, Feb. 14 , 1981, near North Main Street, wearing a three-quarter length tan coat, cream sweater and blue jeans, police said.

Police determined several possible motives for the homicide due to Scalisi’s prostitution activities.

One suspect was described as a white man who drove a yellow jeep CJ-5 with a brown cloth top, police said. He was described as in his late 20s or early 30s, with brown curly hair and a full mustache and about 5-foot-11 and weighing 160 to 170 pounds.

Other prostitutes reported that this man had come around several times looking for Scalisi, saying that she had stolen drug money from him and that he would kill her, police said. He was also seen looking for Scalisi as a passenger in a light-colored two-door 1970s Monte Carlo with a white vinyl top driven by a friend, police said.

Other motives surrounded the possibility that she had tried to leave her self-proclaimed “pimp” Donald Rumph, and the murders of prostitutes in New Haven and Bridgeport within the past year.
