Because their home phone was broken, the 8-year-old girl ran next door, police said. As the neighbor performed CPR on her mother, Evelyn Colon, 28, the daughter called police and cried for help just after 2 a.m., police said.
When Officers John Buckholtz and Bill Curwen arrived at the home at 331 Ely Avenue, they found Colon bleeding with no pulse. She was taken to Norwalk Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
A next door neighbor told police that he heard a disturbance and saw a black man who was about 18 to 25 years old run from the Colon house south across the yard of 333 Ely Ave., and then turn up Adamson Avenue. Another neighbor heard a garbage can being knocked over and a dog barking, police said.
The neighbor described the man as about 6 feet tall, 150 pounds and wearing a white hat, possibly a painter's-style hat.
According to neighbors, Colon had several boyfriends, and one drove a white City of Norwalk vehicle, possibly an inspector or water department vehicle, that they had seen in the driveway several times, police said.
The autopsy determined that Colon died as a result of two gunshot wounds to her torso but also had contusions to her face, police said.
Over 25 years later, police are still searching for Colon's killer. Evidence collected in the case is being reviewed to determine whether forensic testing can produce a suspect or new leads.
