The 50-year-old woman told police that she was walking through the parking lot of the apartment complex at 5:49 a.m. when she saw a black male with curly hair walking towards her. The man and woman said hello to each other as they passed, and then the man approached the woman from behind and grabbed her purse, police said.

The woman screamed and started chasing the man toward Main Avenue. She said she then returned to her apartment to call the police. She then went to the parking lot of the nearby Duchess restaurant, where she asked an employee to call the police again. She then waited for officers to arrive.

As an officer was responding to the scene, he was flagged down by another woman at an apartment building at 150 Main Ave. She told the officer that she had heard screaming and seen a man enter her apartment building and head toward the basement. She said that she had jammed a piece of plastic under the door, trapping him in the basement, according to police.

As the officer was awaiting additional officers before entering the basement, police were informed that the complainant had seen the suspect heading north on Main Avenue toward Dunkin' Donuts, police said. The officer left the apartment complex at 150 Main Ave. to aid in the search. Police searched the area but were unable to locate the suspect.

When police returned to 150 Main Ave. the woman who had trapped the man in the basement said that he had pushed the basement door open and escaped. Police looked in the area where he had been trapped and found a purse and a sweatshirt. Police reports did not indicate whether it was the same purse that had been stolen from the woman on Union Avenue.

The case was referred to the Detective Bureau and is currently under investigation.
