NORWALK, Conn. -- A Norwalk man tried to escape from his holding cell after he was arrested on charges of driving away from a car crash, according to police.

Elvin Lopez-Hernandez, 27, was charged with operating without a license, criminal attempt, criminal mischief, unsafe backing, escape from custody and evading responsibility. He was held on $100,000 bond and will appear in court Aug. 13.

Police were called to the scene of an accident near the corner of South Main Street and Belle Avenue at 8:15 p.m. Sunday. Witnesses told police that a car had been driving north when it left its lane and hit a parked car. The driver then fled the scene, but several witnesses got a look at the car and were able to write down the license plate number, according to police reports. Others followed the car to nearby Hemlock Place, said police.

Officers were able to locate the car at Lopez-Hernandez's home on Hemlock Place and said that it had damage consistent with the accident, police said.

Lopez-Hernandez was on the porch drinking a beer and said he had been driving the car, according to police. He was taken into custody.

Lopez-Hernandez was taken to police headquarters and placed in a holding facility. Officers heard a loud noise and discovered that Lopez-Hernandez had climbed up into the ceiling of the holding caging and was hiding, police said.

Police said the ceiling doesn't go anywhere and is secure, and he was taken down and placed in another cell.

Lopez-Hernandez caused damage to his original cell while climbing into the ceiling, police said.
