NORWALK, Conn. – A 49-year-old Norwalk man harassed a woman Monday on High Street, and after police apprehended him, officers found heroin in his possession, police said.

The woman was walking to her car at about 1:45 p.m. when Earl Whitfield, of Main Street, approached her and asked for her phone number, according to police.

She tried to rebuff him, but he persisted; and when she ran away, he ran after her, yelling, police said.

She ran into a building on High Street, asked for help and called police. Whitfield did not follow her into the building and police found him in the area a short while later, police said. While questioning him about the incident, an officer reportedly noticed that Whitfield’s eyes were bloodshot and he smelled of alcohol.

During a search, officers said they discovered Whitfield was carrying three small bags of heroin.

He was charged with misdemeanor second-degree breach of peace, possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics near a school and related charges. He was held in lieu of a $25,000 bond and was scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court on Tuesday.
