Michael Cayo, 23, was charged with carrying a gun without a permit, weapons in a motor vehicle, possession of less than four ounces of marijuana, operation of a motor vehicle while using a hand-held mobile phone, and failure to use a turn signal. He was held on $50,000 bond and will appear in court Aug. 31.

Police were conducting selective DUI enforcement Sunday when they saw Cayo make a turn without using his signal, according to police. Officers could also see that he was speaking into his cellphone as he was driving, police said. He was stopped on Monterey Place.

While speaking with Cayo, an officer reported smelling marijuana. When asked, Cayo admitted that he had marijuana in his center console, which was in plain view, according to police reports.

Officers searched the car and found a loaded semi-automatic handgun in the car, according to police. Cayo did not have a pistol permit, police said. He was then taken into custody.
