NORWALK, Conn. – A Norwalk man was charged with driving under the influence after smashing into a utility pole down the block from his driveway over the weekend, police said.

Police were called to Harbor Avenue at about 6:30 p.m. Saturday on reports of a car sticking out of a driveway and blocking the road. Officers found Miguel Gonzalez, 47, of Harbor Avenue behind the wheel of a car stopped in the driveway, police said.

His car had extensive damage, including scratches along a side, two flat tires on the driver’s side and a still-smoking engine, according to the police report. Gonzalez told officers he was attempting to enter his driveway, but could not because of the smoke and damage, police said.

Officers also found a nearby utility pole had been snapped with a bent pole support bracket, police said. The pole had paint transfer on its side that matched Gonzalez’s car, according to the police report.

Gonzalez told police he had had two beers hours earlier, and he failed field sobriety tests at the scene, police said. At Norwalk Police headquarters, a breath test registered his blood alcohol content at 0.26, more than three times the legal limit to drive.

Gonzalez was charged with driving under the influence, evading responsibility and a failure to drive in the proper lane. He was released after posting $2,500 bond, and is due in court on Jan. 16.
