NORWALK, Conn. -- Norwalk police are investigating the shooting death of a man found on Leonard Street early Thursday by a passing motorist.
Police received a call from a driver who reported seeing a man down in the area of Isaac Street at 2:16 a.m. Thursday. When responding to the area, officers found a male victim lying on the pavement of nearby Leonard Street. Officers attempted to render medical aid but discovered that the man was dead, police said.
The victim has been identified as a 43-year-old Hispanic male resident of Norwalk, according to police. The victim's name is being withheld until his next of kin is notified. Some of his family members are out of the country, and police have been unable to reach them, police said.
The Detective Bureau and the Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene of the shooting. Investigators documented the scene, collected evidence and canvassed the neighborhood for leads. After the body was found, some residents did report hearing shots fired, police said.
The victim was found on the sidewalk on Leonard Street, near SoNo Studios and the All-In Hookah Lounge. The crime scene had been cleared by late Thursday morning, and a lit candle had been placed on the sidewalk in honor of the victim.
The shooting is the first homicide Norwalk has seen since October 2012, police said.
"We are looking for public assistance on this homicide," said Lt. Paul Resnick.
